"Letters from the Trenches" Assignment (Interactive Activity)

    • When soldiers were fighting in the trenches during World War I., they were faced with extreme boredom. To break this boredom, they often wrote letters home. Some soldiers would try and spare their families the traumatic details of what they were experiencing so their families wouldn’t worry. However, some wrote about the horrors they encountered and how difficult things really were. These letters were important to both the soldiers and their families.
  1. Write a “letter from the trenches” to someone back home.
  2. The letter must be 3 paragraphs.Each paragraph must be 5 complete sentences!
  3. The first paragraph must describe the surroundings. (setting, environment, what does it look like, smell like, sound like?)
  4. The second paragraph must describe the situation. (Ex. Where is your unit located? What is happening at the moment? How close is the enemy? etc.)
  5. The third paragraph must describe your feelings about living in the trenches and how you feel about being away from home etc.
  6. Have a peer revise your letter.
  7. Look over your letter and make the last corrections.
  8. Type your letter onto this wiki for final submission and to share with your classmates.
